‘Not all VCs think that Nurse Browne is dispensing the right medicine …’

The Times Higher Education reports that Head of Universities UK  Professor Steve Smith’s attempt to get all Vice Chancellors to support the rise in tuition fees was rebuffed by a number of V-Cs angry at what seemed to be an overtly political move

This comes as Liberal Democrat MPs show increasing unease over the proposals, with MP Greg Mulholland tabling a motion on Friday that the  vote be postponed pending a proper debate:

Professor Smith is concerned that the Coalition Government will punish universities for their own disarray, by going ahead with the higher education spending cuts if the vote to raise fees is lost.  This would require it not only to take on its own MPs whom it has failed to persuade, but also the British population 80% of whom believe that investment in higher education should remain at its present level or be increased.
