The Campaign for the Public University is open to all. It is a broad-based campaign with no party or other political affiliation. It has been initiated by a group of university teachers and graduate students seeking to defend and promote the idea of the university as a public good. We believe that the public university is essential both for cultivating democratic public life and creating the means for individuals to find fulfillment in creative and intellectual pursuits regardless of whether or not they pursue a degree programme.

  1. Dr Richie Nimmo says:

Like many others I got into academia above all because I believed in its critical and reflexive potential, as well as its role as a vehicle of social mobility and progressive social change. Both are incompatible with the turning of universities into corporate businesses and the transformation of higher education into purely a commodity.

  2. I am finding our that most students quit after basic 2 year studies. They can’t put up with cost or with the shackles for the rest of their lives. Current trebling of university fees are bad for students, bad for mobility and bad for the country.

  3. the investment and acess for education is essential to our democracy and economy. As we see currently with the dismantaling of public education .Also the numbers of dropouts .the dichotomy\
between the elite and poor is out of balance.

  4. Hello, not sure my last message was posted…
Just letting you all know there are a few places including concessions at the event next weekend
A Million Minds – exploring free and anti-university movements from 60s to today – some very interesting contributors – looks like a fascinating weekend in the amazing Braziers Park School of Integrative Social Research

    best wishes
    Trish

  5. All in favour of the campaign against reporting international students – excellent initiative. But, I think we should also pressurise UCU to take a lead. More broadly, the union has no clear policy on the future of higher education and I feel we should be campaigning at branch level and nationally for it to endorse all the principles of the public university.
