The ESRC decision to distribute all postgraduate research studentships as quotas allocated to a select group of Doctoral Training Centres and no longer to accredit Doctoral Training Units has elicited a strong critical response. The Times Higher Education reports disquiet and possible appeals
 
Meanwhile, senior academics at a number of universities have written to Professor Paul Boyle, Chief Executive of the ESRC, about the marginalising of post-1992 universities that had previously had ESRC recognition and quotas. Their letter is here.
